2-ALARM GAITHERSBURG FIRE DISPLACES SEVERAL (07/15/07)(GAITHERSBURG) - Around 12:30 p.m., box 8-5 was dispatched for 10339 Royal Woods Court, for the house on fire. Units arrived to find smoke and flames showing from a middle townhouse. In addition to the RID dispatch, a second alarm was sounded to help bring the fire under control. One person suffered minor burns from the fire and was transported to a local hospital. A firefighter also sustained minor injuries during the incident. Investigators believe the fire started when hot oil, being used for cooking, spilled on the deck of the residence starting the fire. The fire then spread to the house and also caused damage to adjacent homes. In all, around 75 firefighters responded to the call to bring the fire under control. Several families were displaced from their homes due to the extent of damage. Homeowners with decks are reminded about the numerous hazards decks can pose. Grilling or cooking with open flames must be done at least 25 ft from the residence. Further, be aware of disposing material, such as hot ashes or cigarettes, as they can easily ignite the deck over time.
