GWGVFD Junior Fire Brigade

The GWGVFD Junior Fire Brigade is a program designed for teens ages 14 - 18. The membership is limited to 15 members at any given time.

The JFB's main focus is to teach fire safety using our Fire Safety House. Every year this group of teens touches thousands of children with their messages of "Get, low and go" and "Stop, drop and roll". Over 30,000 kids and adults have been reached with fire safety and injury prevention messages over the years through the Fire Safety House. Other community outreach activities include nationally certified FEMA CERT training, participating as mock victims in public safety exercises, neighborhood Santa rides, working at the museum, and generally helping at the station and in fire department outreach efforts.

In addition to their community service efforts, JFB members participate in drills and training to prepare them for the fire department. JFB are eligible to take classes at the Public Safety Training Academy and may become an Emergency Medical Technician-B at the age of 16 after a rigorous training class. Upon reaching the age of 18 and graduation from high school, JFB members are encouraged to "roll over" to our regular membership.

Through the years, we have seen many teens pass through our program. Some are still successful members in the GWGVFD. Others have gone on to career firefighter positions. We have several in pre med or nursing programs, in the military, teaching in public schools, etc. Whatever they have become in life, we like to think that the GWGVFD JFB helped to shape them into the productive adults they have all become.
