CPR Frequently Asked Questions

What CPR classes are taught by the GWGVFD?

Currently we are only offering Healthcare Provider. In the future we may increase the number and types of classes offered.

What are the types of classes and the differences between them?

The Healthcare Provider class is designed for healthcare professionals, including physicians, dentists, nurses, paramedics, EMTs, nursing assistants, and a wide variety of people working in the healthcare industry. It is approximately a 4-5 hour class and is more extensive than the other CPR classes. The curriculum includes relief of FBAO in both responsive and unresponsive victims, bag-mask ventilation and well as mouth-to-mouth and mouth-to-barrier device ventilation. It also includes use of an AED on the adult victim and 2-rescuer CPR for all age groups.

The Healthcare Provider Renewal class is designed for Healthcare Providers with current (not yet expired) CPR card. It covers all the information in a Healthcare Provider class in an abbreviated version.

What is an AED?

AED stands for an automated external defibrillator. It provides quick easy access to defibrillation during a cardiac arrest. They can be found in many locations including airports, malls, sports arenas and various business/office locations.

When are the HCP classes scheduled?

We offer Healthcare Provider. The Healthcare Provider class is usually offered the third Saturday of various months through the year. This class begins at 2 pm and ends at 6pm, and is held in the basement of the old fire station located at 13 East Diamond Avenue.

Do any of the classes include First Aid?

No, at this time we do not teach first aid.

How do I register for the classes?

You may e-mail us at cpr@gwgvfd.org or register online using the CPR Registration Form.

Where are the classes located?

The classes are taught in the basement of the old Gaithersburg Fire Station located at 13 East Diamond Avenue in Old Town Gaithersburg.

Do you teach classes at worksite or other locations?

We are available to teach at other locations but are usually limited to evening and weekend hours as most of our instructors have additional daytime responsibilities.

How much do the classes cost?

Healthcare Provider classes are $75 per person

When and How do I pay for the class?

Payment is due at the start of the first class. We accept cash, money order, or checks made out to "Fireman's Fund of the Gaithersburg Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department" also abbreviated "FF GWGVFD". You may also pay on-line with a credit card via the PayPal service. To pay by credit card you must register on-line and bring a copy of your registration e-mail to the start of class. Please note that you must register on-line to pay via credit card as credit cards are NOT accepted as payment on-site during the class.
